Developing Conceptual Understanding and Procedural Skill in Mathematics: An Iterative Process
نویسندگان
چکیده
The authors propose that conceptual and procedural knowledge develop in an iterative fashion and that improved problem representation is 1 mechanism underlying the relations between them. Two experiments were conducted with 5thand 6th-grade students learning about decimal fractions. In Experiment 1, children's initial conceptual knowledge predicted gains in procedural knowledge, and gains in procedural knowledge predicted improvements in conceptual knowledge. Correct problem representations mediated the relation between initial conceptual knowledge and improved procedural knowledge. In Experiment 2, amount of support for correct problem representation was experimentally manipulated, and the manipulations led to gains in procedural knowledge. Thus, conceptual and procedural knowledge develop iteratively, and improved problem representation is 1 mechanism in this process.

Does Practice and Knowledge Equal Knowledge and Practice?
Debate surrounds the value of procedural practice in learning conceptual material in mathematical domains (Schoenfeld, 2004). We investigated whether purely procedural practice could lead to conceptual gains and explored cognitive load theory as a mechanism for those gains (Sweller, 1988). In a laboratory experiment, 93 undergraduates practiced a procedure by solving 30 problems of an algebra a...
متن کاملDirect and indirect influences of executive functions on mathematics achievement
Achievement in mathematics is predicted by an individual's domain-specific factual knowledge, procedural skill and conceptual understanding as well as domain-general executive function skills. In this study we investigated the extent to which executive function skills contribute to these three components of mathematical knowledge, whether this mediates the relationship between executive functio...
متن کاملImproving Students Learning and Achievement in Mathematics by Using Smart board
Mathematics skill deficiencies for entrants into degrees are welldocumented. Quizzes at the first month of semester and mid-term test confirmed that incoming students to the Shahid Rajaee Teacher Training University lacked basic mathematical skills. In 2011 visual learning resources were created using smart board, an interactive whiteboard, to helpstudents fi...
متن کاملUndergraduate students’ performance and confidence in procedural and conceptual mathematics
The general perception is that high school teaching of mathematics tends to be fairly procedural in South Africa and that students that enter university are better equipped to deal with procedural problems rather than conceptual. In this study we compare the conceptual and procedural skills of first year calculus students in life sciences. We also investigate students’ confidence in handling co...
متن کاملChallenges in Mathematical Cognition
This paper reports on a collaborative exercise designed to generate a coherent agenda for research on mathematical cognition. Following an established method, the exercise brought together 16 mathematical cognition researchers from across the fields of mathematics education, psychology and neuroscience. These participants engaged in a process in which they generated an initial list of research ...
